Structure and Certifications.

Prerequisites

The CRI course prerequisites are:

  • (a) Hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given
  • (b) Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction
  • (c) Have flown at least 300 hours flight time as pilot of aeroplanes (not including microlights)
  • (d) Have flown at least 30 hours as PIC on the applicable type or class of aeroplane

Ground school

The course includes 35 hours of ground school — 25 hours “Train the Trainer” from the FI course and 10 hours of technical training. This includes revision of technical knowledge, preparation of lesson plans and development of classroom instructional skills.

You practice giving ground lessons to the FIC instructor. Ground school is integrated with flight training to maximise benefit from time in the air.

Flight training

3 hours of flight instruction, typically lessons taken from the PPL syllabus that are likely subjects for a CRI in the real world.

Assessment of Competence

On successful completion of the course a recommendation is made to complete the Assessment of Competence (AoC). This must be carried out within 6 months of completing training; failure to do so requires extra training. The AoC is conducted by an independent FIE. AoC fees are not included in the course price.

Frequenty Asked Questions

Your questions answered.

What can a CRI teach?

Class or type ratings, SEP renewals and aerobatic ratings where qualified — not Night rating or IMC/IR instruction.

What experience do I need?

300 hours on aeroplanes (excluding microlights), 30 hours PIC on the applicable class or type, plus the licence and rating you will instruct for.

Is the AoC included?

No — training is included; the Assessment of Competence with an independent FIE is separate.

Can I extend CRI privileges?

Yes — further classes or types when you meet the 15 hours PIC and supervised right-seat flight requirements within the last 12 months per FCL.

Which aircraft?

Training is typically on our Grob 115B; Cessna 152 and Piper PA-38 are also in our training fleet.
